John Milling papers, 1862 Dec. 10-1863 Nov. 18.

Two letters concern the death of John, an African American slave belonging to Dr. John Milling, who died on Sullivan's Island during construction of fortifications to protect the South Carolina coast against U.S. Union forces. Letter, 10 Dec. 1862, Camden, S.C., to Maj. J.M. DeSaussure, Columbia, S.C., requesting that DeSaussure bring before the legislature Milling's petition for compensation for the death of John, a slave "who died... while in the service of the State." Also including affidavit, 18 Nov. 1863, of Dr. Christopher Fitzsimons, stating that he "attended John the slave of Dr. Milling, who... had been sent down from the upper country to work on the public defenses" but who died of dysentery contracted on Sullivan's Island.
